To get back in the swing of things, here is Bobby Marshman at what appears to be eldora speedway, you'll notice the mask hanging below his chin, and although it may resemble something from a Jason movie or just an old hockey mask, this is what is considered to be the first "Full Face Helmet". Doesn't appear to offer a lot of protection but it's not hard to find a victory lane photo of a driver with cuts on his face due to rocks, and other flying debris. There's a very famous AJ Foyt photo I'll have to find that shows him in victory lane with a broken nose. This leather did offer quite a bit of protection over the soft cotton handkerchiefs traditionally worn.
